We discuss first the origin of contrast mechanism (absorption, fluorescence and scattering) used on diffuse optical imaging and spectroscopy. Then, various experimental approaches are described based on CW, pulsed and modulated light excitation and detection. Theoretical models which provide solutions for direct and inverse problems are presented using random walk theory.
