Abstract
Recently our Honourable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has announced a scheme for villagers related to irrigation purpose. Under this scheme solar powered dc motor will be used for running pumps in farms financed by Government of India. In this context an effort is made to design light weight magnetically levitated solar powered dc machine which can work at same time as motor and generator. The proposed dc machine is also directly solar powered thus bypassing the use of the battery for storing the solar energy. Hall Effect sensors are used for switching on and switching off and speed control of the proposed dc machine. However in the absence of sunlight, battery (charged from solar energy) can be attached to the proposed dc machine. The structure of the machine is made from acrylic sheet, the rotor is made using a disc cut from acrylic sheet and stator windings are wound on light weighted bobbins. Total twelve coils are used in the stator out of which six coils are used for motoring purpose and remaining six coils are used for generation purpose. The proposed dc machine is a brushless dc machine hence avoiding the use of commutators. Thus by making the above mentioned modifications in the construction of the conventional existing dc machine, the size, weight, volume and cost of the proposed dc machine is reduced drastically. As the designed dc machine can work as motor and generator at the same time, hence it can be used by the farmers for irrigation purpose during day time and for lighting their homes during night.
