Based on a photographic survey from many ports, this paper shows how the American spirit is diversely expressed on a broad range of vessels, including military craft, commercial fishing and passenger vessels, and pleasure craft. Contrast is also made with commercial vessels from other nations, which show some of the finest innovations in modern hull ornamentation.
