A Preliminary Report on an Archaeological Survey on the Slopes of Kilimanjaro

Abstract

Summary This article describes briefly the results of a preliminary survey of the southern and north-western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and provides a list of the sites discovered. Early Iron Age Kwale pottery is present on both sides of the mountain and on the southern side appears to be associated with Maore ware as in the North Pare Hills. Other pottery-types testify to later occupation of the southern area prior to the emergence of the Chagga people. On the north-western side are traces of possible Neolithic and Late Iron Age occupation, both of which have links to the west or north-west.
