Abstract
ware issues can make a difference. An upgrade proved inaccurate when the programmers were found to have ‘truncated’ rather than ‘rounded’ results of calculations – an elementary error. The author is most comfortable with technical detail. The political background to the missile’s development, adoption and modernisation is listed without further comment. The sheer volume of material means it is hard to get a clear overview of the missile’s development at first reading. The author seldom reveals the personalities behind each breakthrough. But these are minor blemishes in a remarkable account of the evolution of one highly successful, but fortunately unused weapon system. Despite its heavy technical content, there are clear signs of literary style in the writing. Overall, a fascinating book which documents a triumph of technology and engineering. History owes a debt to the author for taking such care to document the whole project. We can only hope that anyone bent on total world domination is unable to replicate these achievements!
