Grammar is taught in order to produce good sentences and understand the meaning of sentence. In grammar class, students are expected to be able to write a good sentence especially in compound sentence. This study is aimed to describe the English Department students‟ ability in writing compound sentence. The type of this research was a descriptive research. The population of this research was fourth semester English Department. The total number of sample was 18 students from education program. Random sampling was used to collect the sample. The data were collected by giving writing test and the test was done in 60 minutes. They were asked to write argumentative essay at least 5 paragraph.
