Abstract
This paper presents a small, low cost implantable electrical stimulator for research applications. The unit consists of a lithium battery and electronic circuits mounted on a printed circuit board. These components are potted in biomedical grade epoxy which has external connections for the stimulating conductor (lead). The operating characteristics can be changed after the unit has been implanted by positioning a permanent magnet close to the unit and then removing it. The electrical stimulator is then cycled to a new operating mode. The operating life of these Units is 2-12 months depending on the application. The main application is muscle training for cardiomyoplasty research but these stimulators can be used in a wide variety of implantable devicee.
