Do we need advanced humans?

Abstract

The following topics are discussed: challenges faced by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) during the decade of the 1980s; the activities of the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) of the NRC; the Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance (SALP) which attempts to gauge how well a utility is operating a plant; the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), which developed following the accident at Three-Mile Island; and the question of how nuclear power plants should organize and manage their human and technological resources to maximize their safe and efficient operation.<>
