Abstract
Aim: The aim of the research is to examine the behaviors of healthy children who have a sibling with type 1 diabetes and the affecting factors. Material and Methods: Cross-sectional and analytical research was carried out with the mothers (n=147) and healthy siblings (n=147) of children with of Type 1 diabetes followed in the Pediatric Endocrine Polyclinics of three hospitals. “Identification Form”, “Sibling Problems Questionnaire’’, “Schaeffer Sibling Behavioral Assessment Scale-Sibling Forms and Mother Forms” were used as data collection tools. Analysis of the data; number-percentage distributions, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, Bonferroni and Spearman’s Rho Correlation tests were made using. (p=0.033), educational status (p=0.010, p=0.035) and ability to measure blood sugar (p=0.029) and insulin administration (p=0.012) on their own affected the behaviors of healthy siblings. Conclusion: The behaviours of healthy children who have a Type 1 diabetic sibling change according to their status of having any training on diabetes management and are also affected by a lot of factors.
