Abstract

after application of potassium citrate structural changes due to an intracellular edema are found which are explained on the basis of an increased permeability of the cellular membrane by the inactivation of Ca++ by citrate . These findings suggest the use of magnesium chloride-procaine amide as cardio-plegic agent for the maintainance of myocardial viability of the arrested heart in human cardiac sur gery.
