Abstract

Demand for electrical power is growing day-today and utilities are forced to operate nearer to their load ability limits. Voltage stability has become main concern for ensuring healthy grid operations. In literature various indices are proposed for predicting the voltage stability limits of radial power system but in-depth analysis is hardly done. An attempt has been made to study the behavior of various indices proposed in the literature with the equivalent electrical distance of the load bus from the source. A new index named equivalent electrical distance index (Zth) is proposed which is calculated using the equivalent electrical distance from bus to the source. The proposed index is compared with existing indices and progress of voltage stability with location of DSTATCOM is tested on 15 bus and 28 bus radial rural electrification networks using MATLAB software.
