Abstract

The present work reports the design and development of a microcontroller based optoelectronic instrument for estimating the degree of corrosion of metal surfaces by measuring the changes in surface texture. A light beam from an LED source is focused onto the corroded surface. The reflected and scattered light intensities are measured individually and the corrosion factor involving the ratio between the two values is computed and displayed on the LCD by employing a PIC microcontroller. Optical response of the metal surface is found to be a consistent measure of the degree of corrosion of the metals.
