Abstract

Dementia is a term that describes a variety of chronic diseases that target the elderly through their aging process. It affects the elderly’s skills and abilities as most importantly, it affects their orientation, navigation and wayfinding skills making them, in a worst-case-scenario, lost in finding their way. Accordingly, and to provide proper healthcare services for the elderly, their families endure additional financial burdens and thus, Location Based Services (LBS)-enabled systems come to play. The main aim of this literature review is to shed light on the capabilities of those systems encouraging both the elderly and their families to build more trust in utilizing such products. Other aims would be to help researchers and manufacturers alike to endorse current mechanisms that would make their state-of-play systems more secure and private. The literature review utilized a qualitative approach in which, the knowledge attained, from peer-reviewed papers and websites reflecting the last decade, was analyzed and presented to derive comparisons and discussions that resulted to a final conclusion.
