Abstract

Ice melting by heating overhead wires with electric current is mainly used for prevention of ice and wind accidents. Current increase is accompanied by reduced ice melting time under all possible weather conditions determined by wind speed, air temperature, and ice wall thickness. The authors investigate ways to improve discrete control of the rectifier unit that ensure the greatest possible current values at overhead line phases. They provide recommendations concerning simplification of a control unit of the discretely controlled rectifier and of the thyristor converter design without current decrease during ice melting.
