A literature review was carried out, seeking to qualitatively explore the data on the topic addressed. To access them, the scientific storage platforms Scielo and Google academic were used. In considering the Brazilian legislation, the portals of the Planalto and of the federal and state legislative houses in Paraíba were used. For search criteria, the keywords were used: Environmental Education; Sustainability; Education in Paraíba; Basic education; and SDGs 4. The time frame was 11 years, covering publications from 2010 to 2021. Therefore, debating topics such as sustainability in schools becomes essential, from a developmental, socio-environmental and educational point of view, so that students understand their relevance in the contribution of the preservation, defense and sustainable use of natural resources, in addition to assisting in the fulfillment of SDG 4. It is concluded that it was possible to verify that few students understand the concept of sustainability, strengthening the need to apply the theme in the school environment permanently and interdisciplinary. It was possible to show that the contents related to Environmental Education (already scarce) are not approached in an interdisciplinary way, being applied almost only by teachers of Natural Sciences.
