Abstract
In pre-revolutionary Russia, women showed interest in learning new professions, in particular the legal profession, which appeared in 1864. Although the law did not allow them to do this, some of them came close to doing it, and some even acted as lawyers in lawsuits. In the article, these facts are studied in the context of the political situation. Imperial diversity, due to which different legislative norms were applied simultaneously on the territory of the state, helped the development of women’s legal practice in Siberia and Finland. However, in general, the issue of admitting Russian women to the profession was not resolved. Although the judiciary and significant political forces provided support to women lawyers, the latter were hindered by the government, which did not want the growth of women’s participation in public and political life. This barrier was not good for the progress of the country and multiplied anti-government sentiment.
