The article explores what is probably the earliest known episode when French eighteenth-century actors held up an educational model borrowed from Russia as an example, rather than the other way around. It focuses on a memorandum presented to Louis XV by Joseph Pâris-Duverney, the founder of École royale militaire in Paris, in which the author sets up the Noble Land Cadet Corps established in St. Petersburg in 1731 as the model for the new French school. Both institutions were among the most significant educational innovations in the two countries in the eighteenth century. Additionally, the École is also central for Michel Foucault’s story of disciplinary power. A study of possible Russian influence on this French institution introduces a new perspective on the history of Franco-Russian cultural exchanges in the eighteenth century. This article also introduces the text of Duverney’s memorandum and offers an overview of the ways in which the Corps was perceived by Western Europeans of that day and the channels through which information about the Corps could have reached Pâris-Duverney.

In May 1854, Ishan Muhammad Sharif Mansurov was arrested at the fortress of Kapal in south-east Kazakhstan. The investigation into this case lasted nearly eight years and involved a variety of imperial institutions including the Muhammad Spiritual Assembly. Why was the figure of this mysterious Sufi of such interest to the officials? By the mid-nineteenth century, the incorporation of Central Asia into the Russian Empire coincided with the intensification of Islamophobia and a growing suspicion against itinerant Sufis (ishans). The examination of the Mansurov case indicates that colonial authorities simply ignored that publications about Sufism and Islam circulated within the empire. The circumstances of this epic and dramatic case allow us to argue that ignorance greatly weakened and destabilized the imperial policies of toleration of Islam. Nescient of Sufism, officials easily succumbed to information panic and spent a great deal of resources and effort investigating cases like Mansurov’s. Ignorance was the main source of Russians’ fears.

In pre-revolutionary Russia, women showed interest in learning new professions, in particular the legal profession, which appeared in 1864. Although the law did not allow them to do this, some of them came close to doing it, and some even acted as lawyers in lawsuits. In the article, these facts are studied in the context of the political situation. Imperial diversity, due to which different legislative norms were applied simultaneously on the territory of the state, helped the development of women’s legal practice in Siberia and Finland. However, in general, the issue of admitting Russian women to the profession was not resolved. Although the judiciary and significant political forces provided support to women lawyers, the latter were hindered by the government, which did not want the growth of women’s participation in public and political life. This barrier was not good for the progress of the country and multiplied anti-government sentiment.
