Abstract

Rizzi(1997: 297) suggests that the recursion of ForceP and FocP in the structure of the left periphery is banned. However, there are some structures that have double complementizers and subject-multiple auxiliaries inversion in embedded clauses. Gelderen(2004), Radford (2018), Nyvad(2016), and Jang(2014) present double complementizer structures such as that+if/whether/wh-word which one ForceP cannot accommodate. In addition, regarding FocP, Culicover & Winkler(2008) and Park(2012) suggest subject-multiple auxiliaries inversion in embedded than/nor clauses. In general, head movement of T to FocP accounts for the type that inverts single auxiliary, but is incompatible with the type of multiple auxiliaries inversion. Many theoretical proposals have difficulty in accounting for these structures. This paper proposes Split-ForceP and Split-FocP to solve these phenomena which existing theories cannot explain properly.
