Abstract
The article deals with metaphorical means of interpreting the conceptual content of A. N. Ostrovsky’s literary articles. Metaphors with spatial connotations and evaluative properties of characters. The author makes deep symbolic generalizations, actively using various methods of verbal expression for an ironic description heroes. The main pictorial means are combined in a wide figurative field, creating a vivid picture of merchant life.
