Abstract

A comprehensive strategy that supports the transition of clinical experts, including nurse practitioners, to academia can foster the recruitment and retention of academic nurse educators and help alleviate the nurse faculty shortage. An evidence-based Academic Nurse Residency (ANR) program was conceptualized and implemented at school of nursing in the southeastern United States. The ANR program included a robust orientation, development and engagement activities, and a continuous improvement process that included reflective practice. Evaluation data indicate that the ANR program effectively supported their transition and revealed opportunities for enhancing program components. Implementing an ANR program can strengthen and preserve the academic nurse educator workforce.
