Abstract

Introduction: Workplace-based assessments (WBAs) are the main drivers of experiential learning and are a key part of competency-based medical education (CBME). However, the literature on WBAs in postgraduate specialist palliative care (PC) training is sparse. This narrative review synthesizes the current evidence of WBAs in specialist PC training and reveals that WBAs in postgraduate PC training are used in countries with CBME programs; however, they are not specifically evaluated. In Swiss post-graduate PC physician training, WBAs have not been fully implemented. Although WBAs are feasible and accepted for the training of medical professionals in general, they are inconsistently used in Swiss PC physician training. Their consistent introduction could be an opportunity to assist in transitioning toward a CBME training model.
