Abstract

Study of the organic matrix of calcium oxalate renal stones during the least 30 years has produced substantial information on its structure and chemical composition. However, the distinctive chemical nature of this matrix material has yet to be described in sufficient detail to explain adequately the relationship between its chemical composition and reactivity, and the several morphological forms in which it exists. We review representative studies conducted in this area during the last several decades and suggest several additional avenues of investigation that promises to provide a more complete understanding of the chemical and physical nature of this material, and its possible role in renal stone formation.
