Abstract

The present article describes the intensification of cyclonic storm Yaas from a Depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal (BoB) to a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm over the north-west BoB (Odisha coast), its decay as a depression over the central parts of Jharkhand, and the role of windswept rain and storm surge in flooding with other devastations. For the visualization of flooded areas over the coastal tract of Odisha and West Bengal, the Sentinel-1 SAR dataset has been analysed in the Google Earth Engine (GEE) environment. The results from the pixel-based analysis claim with 96.33% overall accuracy that nearly 1593.06 km2 of coastal land has been inundated due to intense rainfall and storm surges. So, this paper helps to understand how a cyclonic storm like Yaas can also cause significant damage to the Coastal People of Odisha and West Bengal and make their lives miserable.
