Abstract
The present study was conducted to assess the impact of ethyl methanesulphonate (EMS) on germination and growth attributes of dragon fruit. Seeds of white-fleshed dragon fruit (Selenicereus undatus) were treated with 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1.0% EMS for 2 and 4 h treatment time, respectively. Germination and survival rate declined collinearly with the concomitant increase in EMS concentration. The LD50 for dragon fruit was estimated to be 0.72% and 0.54% EMS for 2 h and 4 h treatment time, respectively. The lower concentration of EMS (0.1%) and short treatment time (2 h) exhibited stimulatory effect on seedling growth, biomass accumulation, root growth, absolute growth rate, nutrient uptake, chlorophyll content, total carbohydrate and protein content. However, higher concentration (0.5% and 1.0%) significantly affected growth attributing traits.
