Abstract
This article aims to address how the principles of Popular Education contribute to the curriculum of a federal public university, especially for the construction of four disciplines that elected Popular Education and the principles of Freire’s Pedagogy as a methodological reference, aiming to promote food and nutritional security and awareness of citizenship and humanization in health, to address the inequalities related to food, with the local community. We consider socioeconomic transformations that took place in Macaé, State of Rio de Janeiro, and the process of interiorization of federal public universities, which makes possible the articulation between university and society, with a view to joint construction of knowledge and autonomy promotion. We used methodological approach of documentary analysis of Pedagogical Project of Course (PPC) and interviews with teachers of disciplines of the mentioned course. The popular education contributes to nutritionists formation, mainly by overcoming the biologicist technical model, helping in the construction of an educator profile capable of contributing to the subjects' autonomy and self-care in health.
