Designing and implementing temporary works schemes on UK nuclear licensed sites

Abstract

Licencees of nuclear sites in the UK must demonstrate strict control over their construction works, including temporary works. In addition the Office for Nuclear Regulation will scrutinise designs, management controls and processes prior to giving permission for any works to start. This paper discusses the additional considerations for design and implementation of temporary works on UK nuclear sites. It includes case studies showing the steps taken to obtain nuclear safety committee and regulatory permission for tower cranes and a climbing scaffold for constructing a nuclear class 1 concrete structure in Cumbria.
