Abstract
This paper introduces the concept, predecessors, and characteristics of Living Labs. It gives an overview of the predecessors of Living Labs from the 1970s onwards (cooperative design, social experiments, digital city initiatives and home labs) and compares them with the current definition of European Living Labs.
