Both MEA and PEA substation uses lead acid type batteries for a de distribution using as a backup source. Therefore, a battery monitoring is a key function in a charger to check battery condition; however, a traditional charger used in a substation does not have this function. A lead acid battery first order equivalent circuit is utilized to analyze the battery condition by probing an internal resistance of a battery. A first order equivalent circuit is used to determined battery parameters using transient response analysis. PSIM is also used to simulate the proposed equivalent circuit properties comparing to experimental result. The experimental results are conducted by using three lead acid batteries which are used in a PEA substation. The travelling wave theory is also applied to determine the health of under tested batteries.
