Art Appreciation of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Piece: Dumka

Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), a great Russian musician, is one of the outstanding representatives of the Russian nationalistic music. He dedicated his life to music composition and composed a large number of artistic works. He is not only a creative all-round musician in the history of world music, but also a great creator of romantic music. Dumka , is a folk story music of the East Slavic ethnic minority. It usually takes the melancholy as the theme. Also, it connotates the meaning of meditation and contemplation. Typically featured with long melody which is intertwined with extremely fast melody, it is the transition from melancholy and meditation to gorgeous movement. In the music piece, sadness, melancholy coexists with positivity. Full of contradictory elements, it has typical national musicality. More famous includes A. Dvorzak’s Piano Trio and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Piece(OP.59) . This paper takes Tchaikovsky’s piano piece Dumka (OP.59) as the research object, mainly clarifies from its historical background, work style, the image, structure and artistic conception of music, revealing the special artistic style and musical meaning of Tchaikovsky’s Dumka .
