The role of intermetallic compounds and composite-like structure development during dissimilar friction stir welding of aluminum to brass on metallurgical and flexural characteristics
In this study, the effects of developed Intermetallic Compounds (IMCs) and composite-like structure on metallurgical and flexural characteristics of the Friction Stir Welded (FSWed) joints were scrutinized and explored using OM, SEM equipped with EDS, and three-point bending test. Al2Cu was the main developed interfacial IMCs in the sound join; besides existence of a lamellar composite structure within the stir zone. The maximum bending angle was reached beyond 150° without any failure for optimum joint caused by proper mixing of materials. Thinness, continuity, and uniformity were the main observed characteristics of developed IMCs in the sound joint.
