Machinability analysis and setup optimization for five-axis machining
Two potential problems are usually ignored by CAM software for five-axis machining: one is the overtravel for the three linear axes of the five-axis machine tool, and the other is the collision between the spindle and the worktable. The objective of this research was to propose a method based on the visibility map and then, develop a computer program to prevent the mentioned problems from happening. In addition, the optimal position for the workpiece and the optimal tool axis along the tool paths can subsequently be determined through the proposed method. Two case studies were performed to demonstrate that the method presented in the paper is feasible.
