Abstract

The following work shows a methodology for the optimization of a fed-batch fermentation process to maximize xylitol production. The bioreactor is fed with two substrates (different streams): xylose and glucose. A technique based on the Fourier series and orthonormal polynomials is proposed for the parameterization of the control actions, and evolutionary algorithms for the optimization of the parameters involved. One of the most obvious advantages of this proposal is that smooth profiles are obtained (continuous and differentiable), using a minimum number of parameters and reaching an increase in the final product concentration of 2.9%.
