Abstract

Celiac disease is a chronic, immune‐mediated, inflammatory disorder of the small intestine, that occurs in response to a permanent intolerance to gluten in genetically predisposed individuals. Its clinical manifestations may vary significantly, including an asymptomatic presentation. In undiagnosed celiac pregnant women, it has been associated with increased risk of low birth weight newborns. This review aims to provide a better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the association between maternal celiac disease and low birth weight through a literature review of the most relevant publications on the subject in the last 20 years.
