A study of "ねぎらい" behavior: Reconsideration including Japan-Korea comparison

Abstract

본 연구는 "위로（ねぎらい）"라는 배려언어행동에 대해 두 가지 조사를 통해 고찰한 것이다. 하나는 일본어 작품이 한국어로 번역된 것을 조사하고 한일 "위로（ねぎらい）" 표현이 어떻게 나타나는지 고찰하였다. 다른 하나는 한일 모국어 화자의 대화를 통해 한일 양 언어의 "위로（ねぎらい）"에 대해 고찰했다. 또한 "위로（ねぎらい）"의 정의에 대한 제정의를 하였다. 본 연구를 통해 "위로（ねぎらい）"는 [뚜렷한 감정 없이 표현된 어떤 노고(구체성 유무는 상관되지 않음)에 대해 그것을 노고한(하고 있는, 하는) 본인에게 그 노고가 분명히 존재한다는 것을 인정하는 표현으로 상대방 기분을 좋게 하려는 행의]라는 정의를 하였다. 또한, 노고한 쪽의 노고가 다른 쪽에 대한 은혜에 관여하지 않을 때 표현된다는 것이 밝혀졌다. 또, 화자 간에 노고의 치우침이 있을 때 "위로（ねぎらい）"발화 가 나타날 가능성이 제시되었다. In this study, verbal behaviors related to "ねぎらい(negirai)" were examined through two different surveys. The first is a survey of Korean translations of original Japanese works, and examines how "ねぎらい" expressions appear in Japanese and Korean, especially in a formulaic context. The second survey examined "ねぎらい" in both Japanese and Korean languages through conversations between native speakers from both countries. Furthermore, the definition of "ねぎらい" was reconsidered. After reviewing previous research, this study defined "ねぎらい" as a kind of toil (regardless of specificity) that is expressed without clear emotion. It is an attempt to create good feelings for those who have toiled by expressing an acknowledgement that their struggles are clearly present. Furthermore, the survey results reveal that "ねぎらい" is expressed when the difficulties of the toiling party does not involve a benefit to the other participant. In addition, it was suggested that "ねぎらい" may appear when there is a bias toward toil felt between speakers.
