Abstract

Traction motor bearings in electric vehicles experience electromechanical loads and the current flow causes morphological damage to the raceways and rolling elements. The variations in the contact region due to dynamic operating conditions result in different contact mechanisms under combined electrical and mechanical loading. Simulated studies of electromechanical contact between ball and raceway in bearing are carried out in an in-house developed tribo-device. At different applied voltages, variations in friction coefficient and current flow through the contact are reported. A stable current flow at the contact is found to occur beyond a critical applied voltage and this influences the friction and wear characteristics. The wear scars exhibited discharge pits, spot weld regions and abrasive tracks with grease residues. The morphological damages are related to the lubricant film thickness variations within the contact estimated using numerical simulation. Spot weld regions and discharge pits are found in regions of high film thickness and the abrasive tracks in regions of low film thickness.

Wear journal is dedicated to the advancement of basic and applied knowledge concerning the nature of wear of materials. Broadly, topics of interest range from development of fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of wear to innovative solutions to practical engineering problems. Authors of experimental studies are expected to comment on the repeatability of the data, and whenever possible, conduct multiple measurements under similar testing conditions. Further, Wear embraces the highest standards of professional ethics, and the detection of matching content, either in written or graphical form, from other publications by the current authors or by others, may result in rejection.
