Abstract
Objective: Lumbago(Low back pain) is a health problem that occurs due to mechanical and neurological causes and sometimes unknown reasons. The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of manual therapy and home-based exercise program on female patients with chronic low back pain.
Material and Methods: The study is an intervention study and was conducted with female patients who came to the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Unit of a university hospital for regular treatment between December 2017 and February 2018. The index and scale applied are Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The 60 patients included in the study were divided into two groups in a randomized controlled manner. While manual therapy methods and electrotherapy modalities were applied to the first group, the home exercise program prepared by the physiotherapist and electrotherapy modalities were applied to the second group by the physiotherapist.
Results: In the post-treatment VAS evaluation, a statistically significant decrease in pain level was found in the manual therapy group from the two groups. As a result of the evaluation of the patients who were followed up for ten sessions, a significant improvement was observed in pain and sleep quality in both groups.
Conclusion: Manual therapy applications were found to be superior to home exercise programs in reducing the general pain level and creating a positive effect on the sleep quality of the patients. For this reason, manual therapy applications should be widespread in the physical therapy and rehabilitation process.
