Il processo di affermazione del potere romano attraverso le epistole in greco: autorità, amministrazione ed evergetismo nell’età repubblicana

da parte dei Romani nei rapporti con le compagini elleniche dall’intervento di Flaminino in Grecia all’eta di Cesare. In particolare sara indagato, attraverso l’esame di alcuni testi significativi, il grado di abilita degli scriventi romani nell’adottare e reinterpretare i modelli ellenistici della comunicazione regia con le comunita greche adattandoli di volta in volta alle proprie finalita. Ne emerge un quadro variegato, all’interno del quale l’incontro tra il linguaggio diplomatico greco, che i mittenti delle epistole tentano in parte di riprodurre, e il lessico politico romano da vita in quei testi ad un nuovo e ricco idioma - greco nella forma, romano nella sostanza - in grado di esprimere le diverse sfumature assunte dal potere romano in Oriente nella tarda eta repubblicana. Nell’epistola romana in lingua greca si dovra dunque riconoscere tanto uno strumento di imposizione dell’autorita del Senato e dei suoi rappresentanti sulle province orientali quanto un mezzo di espressione della benevolenza romana in Oriente o anche semplicemente un veicolo per comunicare soluzioni amministrative alle comunita interessate. This paper provides an in-depth study on the resort to letter-writing by the Romans in the diplomatic intercourses with the Greek communities from the exploits of Flamininus in Greece until the age of Caesar. Through the exam of very meaningful texts, it will be particularly tested the ability of Roman letter-writers to adopt and reinterpret the Hellenistic models of royal communication to the Greek cities and peoples, on each occasion accommodating those models for their own specific purposes. The result is a multi-coloured picture in which the contact between the Greek diplomatic language, that the Roman letter-writers tried partially to reproduce, and the Roman political lexicon generates a new and rich idiom – Greek in form, Roman in spirit (Sherk) – that suitably portrays the variable forms taken up by the Roman authority in the East during Late Republic. In the Roman epistle in Greek we should then recognize a tool for imposing the power of the Senate and its deputies on the Eastern provinces as well as a way of expressing Roman benevolence towards the Greeks or sometimes just a vehicle for the communication of administrative arrangements.
