The diuretics chosen for combination with acetazolamide sodium were: caffeine, mercurophylline, potassium acetate, potassium bicarbonate, potassium citrate, potassium nitrate, sodium acetate, theobromine, and theophylline. The best combinations of relatively weak diuretics were obtained with the acetazolamide sodium + potassium bicarbonate and acetazolamide sodium + potassium acetate series.
