Polybe, les Lagides et les rebelles

This article offers a new reading of three passages of Polybius concerning the domestic revolts that occurred in Egypt at the time of Ptolemy IV and Ptolemy V, with particular attention to intertextuality and manuscript tradition. It first argues that Polybius’ interpretation of the “revolt of the Egyptians” (V 107, 1-3, XIV, 12, 1-5) was biased by his own treatment of the “war of the mercenaries” against Carthage. A new interpretation of XXII 16-17 is also given, taking into account the fragmentary lines, which are generally not reproduced in modern editions of Polybius.
