Pubblico e privato nelle lettere di Enea e Procopio di Gaza (V-VI sec.)

li epistolari di Procopio ed Enea di Gaza ricoprono un ruolo fondamentale per ricostruire i gusti, le aspettattive e i valori morali dei membri della scuola retorico-filosofica che fiori nella citta palestinese tra il V e il VI secolo. La “deconcretizzazione” tipica delle lettere tardo-antiche, l’uso delle convenzioni del genere epistolografico e il tentativo di trasmettere ai propri lettori una persona non oscurano del tutto la dimensione privata di Enea e Procopio che emerge dalle loro lettere. In particolare, alcune lettere che entrambi gli autori indirizzano a Diodoro, avvocato e amico comune, permettono di intuire i complessi rapporti che legavano tra loro i sofisti cristiani di Gaza. The letters of Aeneas and Procopius of Gaza play a fundamental role to reconstruct the tastes, expectations, and moral values of the members of the rhetorical-philosophical school that flourished in the Palestinian city between the fifth and the sixth centuries C.E. The “deconcretization” of late antique epistolography, the use of the literary conventions of the epistolary genre, and the authors’ attempt to transmit a persona to their readers do not obscure completely our view of Aeneas and Procopius as individuals. In particular, some letters that both authors addressed to Diodorus, a lawyer and a common friend, allow us to glimpse the complex relationships that connected Gaza’s Christian sophists to each other.
