Abstract
The article examines the urban environment in the aspect of the problems of using design solutions in the modern cultural picture of the development of mainly Russian cities. The author notes that more than half of the world's population already lives in urban centers, and in two decades this figure will be more than 60 %. By 2039, our world will be home to at least forty-three megacities – urban areas with a population of more than ten million people. Based primarily on historical and cultural, as well as architectural and compositional, stylistic, morphological and typological analysis, the author turns to post-Soviet design solutions, the periods of the 1990s, 2000s. and after the 2010s, methodological principles such as the principle of diversi-ty in unity, regional uniqueness and chronological sequence are used at each stage of the study. It is concluded that great importance in the current cultural trends should be given to the architectural and construction traditions of the nation and territories that provide a consistent approach to the visual appearance of settlements and cities. At the same time, design solutions that include a visual, abstract-associative group of plastic arts and decorative and artistic properties of materials are able to create a sin-gle aesthetically designed and favorable environment for a person.
