CGIStudio: thirty years, one renderer CGIStudio: 30年,一个渲染器

In February 2017, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences honored Carl Ludwig, Eugene Troubetzkoy, and Maurice van Swaaij with a Sci-Tech Award "for the pioneering development of theCGIStudio renderer at Blue Sky Studios." It's in the same year that Blue Sky celebrates the 30 year anniversary of CGIStudio. Its early charge into ray tracing and global illumination demonstrated their feasibility for visual effects and animation - Blue Sky Studios' Ice Age (2002) was the first ray-traced animated feature film. For this panel we gather a few of the pioneers for a moderated discussion on how Blue Sky managed, in the early days, to challenge the industry's conventional practice of CG production. Joining this panel will be CTO and visionary behind CGIStudio Carl Ludwig, Academy Award winning Directors Chris Wedge and John Kahrs and Academy Sci-Tech Award recipient Hilmar Koch.

The panel proposes a town hall discussion to establish desiderata for submission of nifty assignments to CGEMS, the Computer Graphics Educational Materials Source (EG Digital Library with access through the ACM Digital Library). In a nutshell, CGEMS is looking for computer graphics assignments (curricular material) that (a) are of high quality, (b) are straightforward to use and incorporate in class by educators, and (c) fit easily into the computer graphics curricular framework, e.g., that of the ACM. Among topics to discuss is the expected CGEMS paper submission format and accompanying practical material (e.g., code).

Computer generated hair has historically been a challenging element in the feature film and visual effects industry. Technology and workflow challenges in authoring, animation, simulation, shading, lighting and rendering have motivated studios and software companies to invest in tools and techniques to address the evergrowing creative appetite for hair to deliver captivating stylized and/or realistic characters. To deliver on the creative demand, some feature production studios have specialized hair production across multiple workflows-visual development, rigging, simulation, and lighting to name a few. Has this divided approach to solving a visually holistic challenge affected the tools choices and the way we invest in our toolsets? This panel will bring together engineers and artists representing various areas of expertise to provide a summary of their day to day relationship with hair. They will describe some of the big challenges and their solutions, as well as any issues still outstanding. From there we will dive into some of the commonalities and outliers to better understand how we have arrived at our current state and ultimately what the future is for CG hair, from a technology, workflow, and organizational points of view.

Earlier this year, 18 different technologies were awarded, honoring 34 individuals. These technologies have had a significant impact on how movies are made and have stood the test of time.
