The Indexer forty years ago (October 1981)
Pub Date : 2021-09-01 DOI: 10.3828/indexer.2021.33
H. Bell
Hazel K. Bell, editor of The Indexer from 1978 to 1995, reflects on the content of the journal 40 years ago. In this issue, she travels back to October 1981, a time when indexers were deeply concerned about the introduction of the computer. Hazel will continue this feature in future issues of the journal. If you would like to look further back in time, we recommend reading the regular feature that ran from 1991 to 2008 - ‘The Indexer thirty years ago’ - which covered issues of the journal between 1961 and 1978.

Meandering musings on the comic fiction index: a peer review on Three men in a boat
Pub Date : 2021-09-01 DOI: 10.3828/indexer.2021.24
Paula Clarke Bain
The Society of Indexers recently ran a peer review exercise, via their online forum SIdeline, on indexing a section from the comic novel Three men in a boat by Jerome K. Jerome. The exercise was run by Melanie Gee and involved a group of indexers indexing the same text, looking at all the combined indexes, and discussing their thoughts on the process. Paula Clarke Bain reports on the insights and wisdom shared during these discussions, and considers the role and purpose of indexes in more unusual texts like novels and comic fiction.
索引者协会(Society of Indexers)最近通过其在线论坛SIdeline开展了一项同行评议活动,为杰罗姆·k·杰罗姆(Jerome K. Jerome)的漫画小说《三人同船》(Three men in a boat)中的一段进行索引。

Embedded indexing with Word. Part 6 - sorting and export of entries 嵌入索引与Word。
Pub Date : 2021-09-01 DOI: 10.3828/indexer.2021.25
W. Greulich
This series of articles on embedded indexing with Word concludes with two topics that are particularly important for all indexes: sorting and exporting the entries. How can you easily switch between alphabetical sorting and sorting by page numbers? Is it possible to implement letter-by-letter sorting? Directly related to these problems is the question of exporting the index entries into a format understood by Excel or dedicated indexing programs. The first five articles in the series can be found in the June, September and December 2020 issues and in the March and June 2021 issues of The Indexer (38(2), 38(3), 38(4), 39(1), 39(2)).

Indexes compared: reflections on the benefits of peer review exercises
Pub Date : 2021-09-01 DOI: 10.3828/indexer.2021.23
M. Gee
Book indexers are finding ways to engage in peer review exercises, which mainly involve a group of indexers preparing their own indexes for the same text and then comparing them. They are doing this both online and in person, using discussion forums, tutorials and locally run groups. Melanie Gee reports on the peer review exercises organized by the UK Society of Indexers. She concludes that peer exercises not only build skills but also provide social connections for otherwise solitary professional indexers.

The enigmatic journal index: when a negative search result is positive
Pub Date : 2021-09-01 DOI: 10.3828/indexer.2021.27

Journal editors’ use of cumulative journal indexes is quite different to that of the traditional readership. Journal editors use such indexes as either a source of inspiration or a tool for verifying if and when a topic has (or has not) been covered in their journal. In many cases, finding few or no search results is a positive outcome, as this provides editors with the scope and impetus to commission articles on topics that have either not been covered in their journal for several years or not covered at all. Three examples are provided.

Mad, bad Lord Byron: poet, rake - and indexer?
Pub Date : 2021-09-01 DOI: 10.3828/indexer.2021.26
H. Bell
Was the English poet Lord Byron an indexer? Hazel Bell examines the index in the 1926 edition of The poetical works of Lord Byron, which is written in a provocative style that reinforces the opinions expressed in the notes that accompany Byron’s poetry. Sadly, the indexer is not named. Whether or not it was written by the poet himself, it is a fascinating index that has sadly been omitted from a later edition.

‘Get Your Indexing Shot in the Arm’: American Society for Indexing (ASI) 2021 conference “给你的索引打针”:美国索引学会(ASI) 2021年会议
Pub Date : 2021-09-01 DOI: 10.3828/indexer.2021.30
A. Kingdom
Benefiting from lessons learnt during the hastily organized 2020 online conference, the American Society for Indexing’s 2021 conference was a less intensive affair, with six presentations spread over two days and a little more time allowed for breaks. With over 70 participants from around the world, this was another international affair, with a wide-ranging programme covering the practice of indexing (working more efficiently, embedded indexing), career development, unusual indexing projects (the Mueller report index), and more thought-provoking topics (indexing through the ages, the challenges of musical literature). There was even time for some networking and informal discussion during the ‘Happy Hour’ at the end of the first day.

PubINDEX: no second thoughts allowed
Pub Date : 2021-09-01 DOI: 10.3828/indexer.2021.28
Jon Jermey
PubINDEX is an indexing module from PubHub Tech that is intended to speed up the creation of embedded, hyperlinked indexes in Microsoft Word documents. However, it operates in a purely mechanical way and has no semantic analysis capabilities. In this review, Jon Jermey concludes that while PubINDEX could certainly help users to generate simple indexes and word lists, it does not appear to be a useful tool for professional indexers.

Raising the profile of indexing: National Indexing Day 2021 in the UK
Pub Date : 2021-09-01 DOI: 10.3828/indexer.2021.29
A. Kingdom
National Indexing Day (#indexday), inaugurated in 2017 to celebrate the foundation of the Society of Indexers and promote the profession of indexing, again had to take place virtually in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, indexers are nothing if not imaginative, engaging with social media with enthusiasm and generating ‘likes’ and ‘retweets’ from early morning until late evening. After setting out the background to National Indexing Day (NID), this article gives a flavour of how NID 2021 helped to raise the profile of indexing and indexers in the online environment.
