The chapter on indexes in The Chicago manual of style serves as a standard for index format and as a self-teaching tool for authors and novice indexers. The 14th edition is reviewed for logical sequence, accordance of the guidelines and rules with those of other manuals and authorities, and the quality of its index. It is found wanting in all these areas, but contains much useful information on the indexing process and book index format.

When there is a choice, does a back-of-book indexer use a duplicate entry or a see reference? Guidelines suggest that it is preferable to use the duplicate entry if it would not add to the length or complexity of the index. The author studied 1,100 see references in 202 back-of-book indexes and concluded that 22% of the see references should have been replaced by duplicate entries. Failure to select a duplicate entry instead of a see reference occurs most frequently in science and technology books and in indexes with no subheadings.

Seven texts used by approximately 20 adults and teenagers in an informal Irish language class were indexed by a class member with intermediate-level proficiency in the language. One cumulative back-of-book index was chosen as the best format to provide access to information in each text while also gathering information on specific subjects scattered throughout the seven books. The special needs of the user group, as well as idiosyncrasies in the texts themselves, were considered. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to evaluate the final product.

When researchers at the Musée … pour rire, the international museum of humour in Montreal (Quebec, Canada), started to research film and video extracts for incorporation into the museum exhibits, it became obvious that a database with very specific subject access was necessary. A modified version of PRECIS, dubbed PRECIS-MO, was adopted. The adaptation and implementation are discussed.
