‘Aesthetics and the self’ explains how we take our aesthetic preferences to be a big part of who we are, but how these preferences change surprisingly quickly and often without us noticing. It compares aesthetic engagement or experience to aesthetic judgements. Making judgements is rarely rewarding, entertaining, or pleasurable. Experiences, on the other hand, can be. But why are aestheticians obsessed with aesthetic judgements? The key concept of ‘Western’ aesthetics has always been that of aesthetic judgement, whereas the vast majority of non-Western aesthetic traditions are not too concerned with aesthetic judgements at all, but with the way our emotions unfold, the way our perception is altered, and the way aesthetic engagement interacts with social engagement.

‘Aesthetics and life’ considers several questions to show how aesthetics and life are intertwined on all kinds of levels. Should we treat our life as a work of art? Should we become the spectators of our own life? It discusses how not to be jaded by aesthetic experiences, how expectations can influence our experiences, how some aesthetic experiences have a lot to do with seeing something afresh, and how some aesthetic experiences can have a lingering effect. It concludes that aesthetic experience does not have to be detached, it does not need to be contemplative, and it does not need to involve open-ended attention.

What all things aesthetic have in common is something very simple: the way you’re exercising your attention. What you are attending to makes a huge difference to your experience in general. It can completely ruin your experience or it can make your experience even more rewarding. And in some cases, it can directly confront you with how differently the same artwork appears to you depending on what you’re attending to. ‘Experience and attention’ discusses the difference attention makes, the focus of your attention, the different ways of attending (focused or distributed), the freedom of perception, and the ways of attending to the relation between the experienced object and the quality of our experience.

The Greek word aesthesis means ‘perception’ and when the German philosopher Alexander Baumgarten (1714–62) introduced the concept of ‘aesthetics’ in 1750, what he meant by it was precisely the study of sensory experiences. ‘Lost in the museum’ explains that the scope of aesthetics is far wider than that of art, high or low; it includes much of what we care about in life. It is not the job of aesthetics to tell you which artworks are good and which ones are bad or to tell you what experiences are worth having. Aesthetics is a way of analysing what it means to have these experiences. Aesthetics is, and should be, completely non-judgemental.

7. Global aesthetics 7.

How does your aesthetic experience depend on what culture you grew up in? ‘Global aesthetics’ explains that much of it is due to the abundance of top–down influences on perception. But how do these top–down influences on perception work and what processes mediate them? Two mediating mechanisms are discussed—attention and mental imagery—which are exercised differently depending on what culture we have grown up in. As a result, perception depends on our cultural background. Global aesthetics is therefore about the geography of vision. It concludes that we should always be aware of the cultural perspective that we occupy and treat our aesthetic evaluations with humility.

‘Aesthetic and the other’ looks at the interpersonal dimension of aesthetics. Aesthetics is rarely a solitary endeavour. We are social beings and there are very few aesthetic situations that are devoid of all social aspects. The discussion of the social dimension of aesthetics in the history of ‘Western’ aesthetics has been dominated by aesthetic agreements and disagreements. But the real question about aesthetic agreements and disagreements is not about who is right and who is wrong. It is about the ways in which our experiences depend on the allocation of our attention, our background beliefs and knowledge, as well as our past exposure.

The experiences that would count as aesthetic in some sense are very diverse, and it is challenging to find something they have in common. ‘Sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll’ considers four influential accounts of aesthetics—focusing on beauty, pleasure, emotion, and ‘valuing for its own sake’—to see just how difficult it is to keep the aesthetic and the non-aesthetic apart. These accounts contain some really important pointers to how we should and how we should not think about the domain of aesthetics. It is then argued that these accounts all point in the same direction, namely, that what is special about aesthetics is the way we exercise our attention in aesthetic experiences.
