This study investigated the effects of structured instrument-playing on the improvement of subjective happiness and the reduction of depression of the elderly in residential care. The experimental group consisted of 10 elderly people from S residential care in city “J,” and the control group had 10 elderly people from C, S residential care in city “J.” Before implementing the structured instrument-playing, the subjects were pre-tested to obtain measures of their subjective happiness and depression levels. For the experimental group, the experimental procedure was carried out for a total of 14 sessions, 50 minutes each, during the period of February 13 to March 31, 2017. After these sessions, post-tests were conducted to both groups to track any changes in the participants’ subjective happiness and depression levels. Following is the summary of the major findings: First, structured instrument-playing appeared to have a positive effect on improving the subjective happiness of elderly people in residential care. Also, the data also showed that structured instrument-playing had a positive effect on the participants’ inner happiness, external happiness, and self-control happiness. Second, structured instrument-playing also had a positive effect on reducing depression of elderly people in residential care. By proving that this study works, the findings of this study suggest that structured instrument-playing program can be effective for improving the elderly residents’ subjective happiness and depression. Also, the study suggests that structured instrument-playing can be applied to improve the effectiveness of programs for not only the elderly in residential care but also to nursing home elderly, frail and dementia elderly.

This study determined the effect of bass guitar-playing music therapy on the hand functions of adolescents with cerebral palsy. The subjects of this study were four adolescents who receive social welfare program in a center located in city S. Half-hour individual music therapy sessions were conducted two or three days per week for five weeks, consisting of 15 sessions in total. The music therapy program based on playing bass guitar was aimed at improving dexterity, grasping, and coordination of both hands of adolescents with cerebral palsy. The music therapy sessions were consisted of twanging the guitar string and practicing chromatic scale, accompaniment, as well as applied practices of accompaniment. In order to assess the hand functions, Purdue Pegboard Test and Box & Block Test were carried out by an occupational therapist, before and after the music therapy intervention. The researcher also designed modified Functional Independence Measure (FIM) to measure the differences of performance skills between dominant hand and non-dominant hand, and both hands during chromatic scale performances, by setting up lists of observed criteria. This modified FIM test was estimated by comparing and contrasting the total scores of dominant, non-dominant, and both hands, based on the analysis of six recorded sessions, once per week. The results showed that the four adolescents with cerebral palsy who participated in this program displayed the significant improvement in dexterity of dominant hand, in both Purdue Pegboard Test and Box & Block Test. Moreover, the subjects' performance skill of playing bass guitar enhanced, as evidenced in FIM assessment. Results suggested that bass guitar playing based music therapy could be a useful intervention in rehabilitating hand functions of adolescents with cerebral palsy.

This study analyzes the effects of piano duo-based music therapy program on the sibling relationships and interactions of disabled and non-disabled children. For the research, three pairs of siblings consisting of children under the age of 18 with developmental disabilities and non-disabled children were selected. Using single-subject research design, total 12 sessions of a 40-minute the piano duo-based music therapy program were provided once a week for from Jan. 7th 2017 to Apr. 8th. Pre- and post-tests were performed before and after the program. The result of this study suggests that there was an general improvement in the scores for sibling relationships reported by the non-disabled children and the mothers. Sibling relationships score reported by the mothers from pair C decreased by 12%; however, pair C still showed decrease in scores for negative domains especially the sense of rivalry/competition score indicating a lower level of negativity in their sibling relationship. In conclusion, the study proves that piano duo-based music therapy program can influence the sibling relationships and interactions of disabled and non-disabled children. The study attempted to provide a basis for further researches investigating programs for disabled and non-disabled children’s sibling relationships and the therapeutic use of piano duo-based program.
