As this book goes to press, the world is suffering from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, and it is uncertain how mankind will cope with this devastating global plague. The number of infections and deaths continues to rise in many countries. International travel and the movement of people have been severely affected, as has international trade, and this seems likely to persist for some time. International co-operation and multilateral policy co-ordination are needed more than ever, but have not been forthcoming to the necessary extent. Governments are adopting widely varying policy approaches to fighting the pandemic, with results that also vary widely from nation to nation. Learning from each other could help, but this often appears to conflict with narrow and sometimes even selfish national political objectives…. © 2021 by World Scientific Publishing Europe Ltd.
