Far field scattering of Gaussian beam by an infinitely long conducting circular cylinder 无限长导电圆柱高斯光束的远场散射

The Gaussian beam scattering from an infinitely long conducting circular cylinder with large size parameter and located in the far zone from the source of excitation is investigated. This problem had bean solved via modal expansion technique. However, in case where the scatterer size is extremely large compared with incident wavelength, the previously obtained solutions are no long practical. In this paper, a practical treatment is developed. The Gaussian beam is expanded in terms of continuous plane waves with amplitudes and phases given by a Gaussian weighting functions. The continuous plane wave spectrum of the Gaussian beam is obtained. Since the scatterer size is very large compared with the incident wavelength, the scattering of each plane wave by the conducting circular cylinder is computed via geometrical optics technique. Thus, the evaluation of the Gaussian beam scattering from the conducting circular cylinder reduces to evaluating the inverse Fourier transform to the scattered plane waves. Numerical results using a code developed under MATLAB environment is obtained. The obtained solution is compared with the previously published solutions that are based on modal expansion technique and good agreement is achieved.

A WDM optical communication link a senior project 一个WDM光通信链路的高级项目

Wavelength division multiplexing optical fiber networks rest mainly on two components, the network access station (NAS) and the optical network node (ONN). The design of the network depends heavily on the technology underlying these components, opto-electronics for NAS and photonics for ONN. These areas show large and fast development which will have an impact on network design. A series of characterization experiments were set up and conducted for characterization of the optical fiber and the laser diodes used. Among the important components in this project was a self study item of the student choice for one of the components of the link or the different aspects of the WDM systems and networks. The main features of the component with up to date information were required. The items ranged from fiber fabrication to soliton propagation in fibers and from WDM network layers to topologies as well as DFB and quantum well lasers.

Optics and information processing 光学与信息处理

New technologies of information processing tend to use optical devices rather than the current electronic components. For Egyptian industry to advance in the field of information processing, it is necessary to qualify B.Sc. students by upgrading new courses that use optical computers to secure information with optical technologies. The forthcoming graduate students will represent a qualified generation of designers and technicians. They can hence achieve a high standard of quality for the Egyptian fabrication and maintenance in the field of information processing. Moreover, African and Arab countries are expected to appreciate the cooperation of such high caliber expertise.

Recent progress in the development of the concept and technology of optical filters is reviewed with emphasis on integrated optical filters for wavelength division multiplexing WDM systems. Both the theoretical and practical aspects of the filter are considered. Different filter structures reported are explained briefly showing their state of the art in performance. The possibility of integration is of special interest in our discussion.

Towards an integrated optics technology fabrication and characterization of optical slab waveguides made by ion exchange on glass slides 基于集成光学技术的玻片离子交换平板波导的制备与表征

We present software that enables the design of future processes to give specific index profiles, and is to be expanded in the future to include further process simulation and waveguide and integrated optical components design and simulation. Further development of the facilities to make two-dimensional channel waveguides and basic integrated optics components is planned. This paper presents the different aspects of this establishment and discusses the future steps to build on and improve what has been achieved in the processing and characterization of optical slab waveguides, and to fabricate basic integrated optics components. It also demonstrates the need for further project funding to expand the existing facility into a pilot integrated optics technological basis in Egypt.

Experimental supports for improving the performance of photonics teaching process 提高光子学教学过程性能的实验支持

In the first workshop on teaching photonics at the Egyptian faculties and Institutes, we discussed how to prepare a photonics specialist and how to establish a strong link between teaching places and industry. The experimental part is a very important one in the photonics teaching process. Here, we discuss how to improve the photonics teaching process through the experimental supports. Proposals for optimizing the use and minimizing the cost of experimental arrangements are highlighted. Actual examples of practical applications of each proposal are mentioned.

Teaching laser dynamics and optical communication systems using a standard system simulator 使用标准系统模拟器讲授激光动力学和光通信系统

We introduce a new attractive approach for the teaching of the dynamic behavior of the semiconductor laser diode. This approach is based on the development of a lab experiment/assignment in which the student constructed a model for the laser diode behavior using a standard simulator. Once this model is developed it could be used with other simulator elements to study the static and dynamic characteristics of the laser diode. In addition, this model could be also integrated in a complete optical communication system to simulate its overall performance.

Laser beam scattering on metallic sphere immersed in a medium of aerosols 浸没在气溶胶介质中的金属球上的激光束散射

The problem of scattering of laser beam by a conducting sphere immersed in a medium of aerosols is studied. The exact solution of the scattered field produced from the scattering of a laser beam incident on perfectly conducting sphere has been considered. The Mie scattering of laser beam from cloud of uniform distribution is calculated under MATLAB environment. Different particle size distribution models have been considered and the particle size distributions of three different types of aerosols have been measured. Then, the effective depths of typical aerosols are computed. The numerical results of scattering from cloud have a distribution based on Diermendjian particle size distribution model is obtained.
