This covers the fundamental circuit and device concepts needed to understand analog integrated circuits. After an overview of the basic properties of semiconductors, the p-n junction and MOS capacitors are described and the MOSFET is modeled as a large-signal device. Two port small-signal amplifiers and their realization using single stage and multistage CMOS building blocks are discussed. Sinusoidal steady-state signals are introduced and the techniques of phasor analysis are developed, including impedance and the magnitude and phase response of linear circuits. The frequency responses of single and multi-stage amplifiers are analyzed. Differential amplifiers are introduced. This explores modern developments in the physics and applications of x-rays and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation. It begins with a review of electromagnetic radiation at short wavelengths including dipole radiation, scattering and refractive index, using a semi-classical atomic model. Subject matter includes the generation of x-rays with synchrotron radiation, high harmonic generation, x-ray free electron lasers, laser-plasma sources. Spatial and temporal coherence concepts are explained. Optics appropriate for this spectral region are described. and femtosecond and attosecond of electron dynamics in molecules and solids, lithography, and Metal-oxide-semiconductor systems, short-channel and device and circuits. This course discusses various top-down and bottom-up approaches to synthesizing and processing nanostructured materials. The topics include fundamentals of self assembly, nano-imprint lithography, electron beam lithography, nanowire and nanotube synthesis, quantum dot synthesis (strain patterned and colloidal), postsynthesis modification (oxidation, doping, diffusion, surface interactions, and etching techniques). In addition, techniques to bridging length scales such as heterogeneous integration will be discussed. We will discuss new electronic, optical, thermal, mechanical, and chemical properties brought forth by the very small sizes. introduces to the basics of analysis tools, and control for embedded systems operating in real time. Students learn how to combine physical processes with computation. Topics include models of computation, control, analysis and verification, interfacing with the physical world, mapping to platforms, and distributed embedded systems. The course has a strong laboratory component, with emphasis on a semester-long sequence of projects.

The paper questions how theoretical production has been conceived as a way to scientize French literary studies in the 1960s and 1970s. The emergence of structural methods engaged reflections on scientificity in the Humanities, which were extended in the semiology developed around Roland Barthes. The question of science then appeared through the debates on the role of literary criticism. The end of the 1960s is marked by an evolution towards an aesthetic and theoretical radicalness which identi-fied theory and science. Eventually, the collective construction of poetics around Genette and Todorov shows at the same time how theory is prioritized over the question of science, and the complex relationship with literature in the definition of a science of literature. The paper relies on a study of some theoretical texts and of several theorists’ trajectories, in a perspective of historical sociology of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The history of higher education has revealed all the forms of structural change associated with growth. The following focuses on a special form that involves growth, specialization, and proliferation, and applies mainly but not exclusively to universities. In search for a descriptive term, I have settled on the concept of “structural accretion,” a composite form of growth. Its simple definition is incorporation of new functions over time without, however, shedding existing ones or splitting into separate organizations. It is a complex process reflecting, in the main, the following driving forces: expanding as a result of new opportunities for activities, usually but not always relevant to the main missions of the university: the fact that most growth has been a matter of mutual opportunism; and the power of academic competition and emulation in a highly stratified prestige hierarchy of institutions. This paper reflects the first of three Clark Kerr Lectures on the Role of Higher Education in Society given on January 24, 2012 by Neil J. Smelser on the Berkeley campus and on the subject of “Higher Education: The Play of Continuity and Crisis.” that that work are held, in form and strength, by those in the academy and as expectations for the on the part of those outside it. The three basic historical roles of higher education—teaching, search for and service to society—are each endowed with the connotation that they are publicly valued missions.
