A campus-wide network, introduced in 1986, provides access to library databases, including an online catalog (GEAC Integrated Library System), Current Contents, a current journals database, and a variety of full-text, locally-produced reference databases. In addition, all services (from reference requests through photocopy requests, interlibrary loan, media, reserves, recalls, and recommendations for acquisitions) are available electronically. The campus-wide network extends into every dormitory room, faculty and administrative office, most classrooms and laboratories. The innovation described in this paper is the provision of total electronic information services, including electronic document delivery, to a new Mountaintop campus acquired by the University in 1987, for whom no other library services were planned. Data are given to show usage increases of 10% per month in activity, as the user community adapted to electronic modes of information.

The introduction of microcomputers in public service areas of libraries is allowing the distribution of applications previoiusly available only on mainframe computers. Advances in microcomputer hardware capabilities (faster, more powerful microprocessors and faster, larger capacity data storage) provide the flexibility and distributed computing power necessary for sophisticated telecommunications and database searching applications. The capabilities inherent in local microcopmuter workstations allow libraries to provide users enhanced access to library resources and new and innovative services. Today, in addition to their role as online terminals for searching external databases and library catalogs, microcomputers are also supporting the implementation of intelligent user interfaces and customized local databases. The existence of numerous interlocking local and national computer networks, collectively known as the internet, presents an opportunity for academic and research libraries to offer their patrons access to a wide range of remote electronic information resources. The Colorado Alliance for Research Libraries (CARL) was one of the first to offer databases access over the internet. Their Uncover database indexing current journal contents is a particularly useful source for small and medium sized academic libraries.
